Children in the Garden

When I first started to garden, I thought of all the wonderful things I could do there with my kids.  But now I am realizing that it is a fine balance, and highly dependent upon age.  I have tried to make the garden as accessible as possible, but I also have to lay down certain boundaries (walk only on the stones, don’t stand on the chicken wire fencing, etc.), or we may not have any harvest to be joyful about.

That said, it was fun recently to show Eli the butternut squash seeds that we planted, and how quickly they came up.  “Wow, I just can’t believe it!” he exclaimed.  “Those are the seeds I planted!”  I want him to know the power of a seed, that by one small action and a season of patient tending, he too can reap a harvest down the road.
